Germany Opportunity Card

The Germany Opportunity Card, known in German as the Chancenkarte, allows eligible non-EU professionals to enter Germany for up to one year to search for qualified employment.

Applicants can qualify through either:

While searching for a suitable job, Opportunity Card holders may work part-time for up to 20 hours per week and complete short job trials with prospective employers.

Unlike the Skilled Worker route, the Global Talent Visa does not generally require employer sponsorship or a Certificate of Sponsorship.

Successful applicants can work as employees, become self-employed, establish or direct a company and change employment without obtaining fresh Home Office permission. There is no minimum salary or English-language requirement for the initial Global Talent Visa application.

Check Your Germany Opportunity Card Eligibility

Before preparing an endorsement application, determine:

What Is the Germany Opportunity Card?

The Opportunity Card is a residence title under Section 20a of Germany’s Residence Act. It is designed for qualified foreign nationals who want to enter Germany to search for:

  1. Qualified employment
  2. An apprenticeship
  3. A qualification or recognition measure
  4. An eligible self-employment opportunity

The initial search Opportunity Card may be granted for up to 12 months. The actual validity can be shorter if the applicant proves financial resources for a shorter period only.

A job offer is not required before applying.

However, the Opportunity Card is not a guaranteed employment program. The applicant remains responsible for finding suitable employment after arrival.

Benefits of the Germany Opportunity Card

Eligible applicants may:

  1. Enter Germany without a pre-arranged full-time job
  2. Remain in Germany for up to one year
  3. Search for qualified employment in person
  4. Attend interviews and meet employers
  5. Work part-time for up to 20 hours per week
  6. Hold more than one part-time job within the weekly limit
  7. Complete trial work for up to two weeks per employer
  8. Search for an apprenticeship or recognition measure
  9. Switch to a qualifying work residence permit after finding employment

Trial work must be connected to obtaining qualified employment, vocational training or an appropriate qualification measure.

Two Ways to Qualify

Option 1: Recognised Skilled Worker Path

You may apply without using the points system if:

  1. Your foreign university degree or vocational qualification is fully recognised in Germany; or
  2. You completed an eligible university degree or vocational qualification in Germany.

Applicants in this category are considered recognised skilled workers.

They do not need to achieve six points and are not generally required to provide formal German or English language evidence for Opportunity Card eligibility. However, German language ability can significantly improve actual employment prospects.

Option 2: Opportunity Card Points System

You may use the points route if your qualification is not yet fully recognised in Germany.

You must generally have:

  1. A university degree recognised by the country in which it was obtained; or
  2. A state-recognised vocational qualification involving at least two years of full-time training; and
  3. German language ability of at least A1 or English ability of at least B2; and
  4. At least six Opportunity Card points; and
  5. Sufficient financial resources for your stay.

Foreign university qualifications may require a positive Anabin result or a Statement of Comparability from Germany’s Central Office for Foreign Education. Vocational qualifications may require a Digital Statement on Professional Qualification.

Germany Opportunity Card Points Calculator

Applicants using the points route need at least six points.

Eligibility Factor Points
Partial recognition of foreign qualification 4
Five years of relevant experience within the previous seven years 3
German language level B2 or above 3
Two years of relevant experience within the previous five years 2
German language level B1 2
Age below 35 2
German language level A2 1
Qualification in a recognised shortage occupation 1
English language level C1 or native English 1
Age 35 to 39 1
Previous qualifying stay in Germany 1
Eligible spouse or partner also qualifying for an Opportunity Card 1

All points claimed must be supported by acceptable documentary evidence.

Partial Recognition: Four Points

An applicant receives four points where a German recognition authority has determined that the foreign qualification is partially equivalent.

The same four points may apply in a regulated profession where compensatory measures are required before the applicant can receive professional authorisation.

Professional Experience: Up to Three Points

You may receive:

  1. Two points for at least two years of relevant experience within the previous five years
  2. Three points for at least five years of relevant experience within the previous seven years

The experience should normally be connected to the formal academic or vocational qualification.

German and English Language Points

For the points-based route, the basic language requirement is:

  • German at A1; or
  • English at B2.

Additional points are awarded as follows:

Language Ability Points
German A2 1
German B1 2
German B2 or above 3
English C1 or native English Additional 1

German at A1 or English at B2 can satisfy the basic language requirement, but does not itself provide points at those respective minimum levels.

Age Points

Applicants receive:

  1. Two points if they are under 35 at the time of application
  2. One point if they are aged 35 to 39

Applicants aged 40 or older do not receive age points but may still qualify through other factors.

Previous Stay in Germany

One point may be awarded where the applicant legally lived in Germany for a continuous period of at least six months during the previous five years.

Eligible stays can include:

  1. Study
  2. Employment
  3. Language study
  4. Professional training

Tourist visits and ordinary family visits do not qualify.

Is Employment Guaranteed?

Germany Opportunity Card Blocked Account

Applicants must demonstrate that they can support themselves during the job-search period.

For 2026, the official financial requirement is:

Financial capacity may generally be demonstrated through:

The blocked amount is released in monthly instalments rather than becoming fully accessible immediately.

Can a Part-Time Job Replace the Blocked Account?

Potentially.

A German part-time employment contract can contribute toward the financial requirement.

If the applicant earns at least €1,091 net per month, the employment income may satisfy the current monthly requirement. If the salary is lower, the applicant may need to place the difference in a blocked account.

Additional Financial Evidence for Pakistan Applicants

Pakistan-based applicants must follow the current checklist issued through the German mission or Consular Services Portal.

The German Consulate General Karachi may also require separate evidence covering a return flight to Pakistan. Its published checklist refers to an additional €500 for return travel.

Financial requirements can be updated, so the mission-specific checklist should be reconfirmed before opening a blocked account.

Can You Work on the Opportunity Card?

Yes, but employment is restricted during the job-search stage.

You may generally:

  1. Work for up to 20 hours per week in total
  2. Work for one or several employers within that limit
  3. Complete trial work for up to two weeks per employer
  4. Search for qualified employment
  5. Explore eligible self-employment

The 20-hour restriction applies to the search Opportunity Card. Full-time regular employment generally requires a different residence title.

What Type of Job Must You Find?

To transition to a long-term employment residence permit, the job should normally be qualified employment.

Qualified employment generally means that the position requires skills or knowledge usually obtained through:

  1. A university degree; or
  2. Qualified vocational training.

Basic auxiliary, unskilled or semi-skilled employment may support the applicant temporarily but does not necessarily provide a pathway to a skilled-worker residence permit.

After You Find a Job

After obtaining a suitable job offer, you may apply in Germany for an appropriate residence title, such as:

  1. EU Blue Card
  2. Work visa for qualified professionals
  3. Visa for professionally experienced workers
  4. Recognition partnership
  5. Vocational-training residence permit
  6. Self-employment residence permit

A suitable employment contract and the employer’s Declaration of Employment may be required.

Can the Opportunity Card Be Extended?

The initial job-search Opportunity Card is normally limited to a maximum of 12 months.

In individual cases, it may be extended for up to two additional years where:

  1. The applicant has found qualified employment; but
  2. The requirements for another suitable employment residence title are not yet met.

This is known as the extended Opportunity Card. It is not an automatic extension for applicants who remain unemployed.

Qualifications and Recognition

University Degree Holders

A university graduate may need:

  1. A positive Anabin database result; or
  2. A Statement of Comparability from the Central Office for Foreign Education.

The assessment may examine both:

  1. The status of the educational institution; and
  2. The comparability of the qualification.

Vocational Qualification Holders

The qualification must generally:

  1. Be recognised by the country where it was obtained
  2. Involve at least two years of full-time vocational training
  3. Be supported by the required German qualification statement

Regulated professions such as medicine, nursing, teaching and certain licensed occupations may require formal professional recognition or authorisation before the applicant can fully practise in Germany.

Documents Commonly Required

The exact checklist depends on the applicant’s qualification, points claims and German mission.

Common documents include:

  1. Valid passport
  2. National visa application
  3. Passport photographs
  4. CV
  5. Motivation or job-search plan
  6. University degree or vocational qualification
  7. Academic transcripts
  8. Anabin evidence or Statement of Comparability
  9. Vocational qualification statement where applicable
  10. German or English language certificate
  11. Employment references
  12. Evidence supporting professional experience
  13. Recognition decision where applicable
  14. Blocked-account confirmation
  15. Declaration of Commitment where applicable
  16. Part-time employment contract where applicable
  17. Health-insurance evidence
  18. Proof of accommodation or intended stay
  19. Evidence of previous German residence
  20. Marriage or partnership documents where points are claimed
  21. Visa fee
  22. Mission-specific supporting documents

Documents not issued in German or English may require an accepted translation.

Application Process

Germany Opportunity Card Application Process

Step 1: Complete an Eligibility Assessment

Review:

  1. Qualification
  2. Recognition status
  3. Age
  4. Language ability
  5. Professional experience
  6. Shortage occupation status
  7. Previous German stay
  8. Financial capacity
  9. Realistic employment prospects

Step 2: Confirm the Correct Pathway

Determine whether the applicant qualifies as:

  1. A recognised skilled worker without points; or
  2. A points-based applicant requiring at least six points.

Step 3: Verify the Qualification

University graduates should check Anabin or obtain a Statement of Comparability where required. Vocational applicants should obtain the applicable qualification statement or recognition evidence.

Step 4: Complete the Language Requirement

Points-based applicants must normally demonstrate:

  1. German A1; or
  2. English B2.

A higher German-language score can improve both eligibility points and employment prospects.

Step 5: Arrange Financial Evidence

Prepare:

  1. Blocked account
  2. Declaration of Commitment
  3. Eligible part-time employment; or
  4. A permitted combination of financial evidence.

Step 6: Prepare a German Employment Strategy

This should include:

  1. Target occupation
  2. Target cities or regions
  3. German-format CV
  4. Employer list
  5. Job portals
  6. Language-improvement plan
  7. Recognition requirements
  8. Realistic salary expectations

Step 7: Submit the National Visa Application

Applications may be initiated through Germany’s Consular Services Portal where available. Pakistan applicants should follow the process assigned to their jurisdiction. The German mission states that Islamabad applications are handled through the online Consular Services Portal, while Karachi applicants should follow the applicable Consulate General guidance.

Step 8: Travel and Begin the Job Search

After arrival, applicants should complete required local formalities, which may include:

  1. Address registration
  2. Health-insurance arrangements
  3. Bank-account activation
  4. Tax registration for employment
  5. Residence documentation
  6. Job applications and interviews

Step 9: Change to a Work Residence Permit

After finding suitable qualified employment, apply to the responsible local foreigners authority for the correct long-term residence title.

Can Your Spouse and Children Accompany You?

Spouse or Partner

A spouse cannot normally join an Opportunity Card holder through ordinary spouse reunification solely on the basis of the temporary job-search card.

A couple may travel together where both partners independently qualify for their own Opportunity Cards.

After the principal applicant obtains qualified employment and switches to a more stable residence title, family reunification may become available subject to the applicable requirements.

Children

Children may be able to accompany an Opportunity Card holder in certain circumstances, provided the applicant demonstrates sufficient resources and meets the relevant family and accommodation requirements.

Family applications require careful individual assessment because the standard €1,091 monthly amount relates to the principal applicant and may not cover accompanying dependants.

Is German Language Mandatory?

It depends on the application pathway.

Pathway Formal Language Requirement
Fully recognised skilled worker No general Opportunity Card language certificate requirement
Points-based route German A1 or English B2

Even where German is not legally mandatory, applicants with little or no German may face significantly reduced job opportunities.

Many employers, particularly outside international technology and engineering companies, expect employees to communicate in German.

Is a Job Guaranteed?

No.

The Opportunity Card gives an eligible applicant permission to enter Germany and search for employment. It does not provide:

  1. Guaranteed employment
  2. Government job placement
  3. Guaranteed salary
  4. Free accommodation
  5. Permanent residence on arrival
  6. Automatic family reunification
  7. Automatic visa extension

Applicants should critically assess demand for their occupation, professional licensing requirements, German-language expectations and available savings before applying.

Common Reasons Applications Fail

Incorrect Qualification Evidence

A degree certificate alone may not prove German recognition or state recognition in the country of origin.

Fewer Than Six Points

Points-based applicants must meet the basic qualification and language requirements as well as obtaining six points.

Unsupported Work Experience

Experience letters should show:

  1. Job title
  2. Employment dates
  3. Duties
  4. Working hours
  5. Salary
  6. Employer details
  7. Connection to the applicant’s qualification
Insufficient Financial Resources

The blocked account or permitted alternative must cover the relevant period according to the current rate.

Weak Language Evidence

Points-based applicants should use an accepted certificate proving the required CEFR level.

Unrealistic Job-Search Plan

Applicants should demonstrate a credible understanding of their occupation, German labour market and recognition requirements.

Treating the Visa as Permanent Residence

The Opportunity Card is initially a temporary job-search residence title. A suitable job and separate residence application are generally required for longer-term residence.
