Sweden Job Search Visa
Look for Qualified Work or Explore a Business in Sweden
Sweden Job Search Visa
The Sweden Job Search Visa is officially a residence permit for highly qualified persons who want to come to Sweden to:
- Look for qualified employment; or
- Explore the possibility of starting a business.
The permit may be granted for up to nine months and does not require an existing Swedish job offer.
However, it is not a general job-seeker visa for every graduate. Applicants must normally hold a qualification equivalent to a Swedish second-cycle degree, generally a master’s-level or higher qualification.
Check Your Sweden Job Search Eligibility
Before applying, determine:
- Whether your qualification is equivalent to master’s level
- Whether your degree can be verified
- Whether you have enough personal funds
- Whether your health insurance meets Swedish requirements
- Whether your occupation has realistic demand in Sweden
- Whether professional recognition or licensing is required
- Whether a direct Swedish work permit would be more suitable
What Is the Sweden Job Search Visa?
This Swedish residence permit allows qualified non-EU and non-EEA nationals to enter Sweden to search for employment or investigate the possibility of establishing a business.
To qualify, you must generally:
- Hold a valid passport
- Have completed a second-cycle qualification
- Plan to look for work or explore starting a business
- Have sufficient personal funds
- Hold comprehensive health insurance
- Be outside Sweden when applying
- Apply for and receive the decision before travelling to Sweden
The permit may be granted for a maximum of nine months but never beyond the validity of the applicant’s passport.
Who Can Qualify?
The route is primarily intended for highly educated professionals such as:
- Information technology professionals
- Engineers
- Researchers
- Healthcare specialists
- Finance professionals
- Scientists
- Data and artificial intelligence specialists
- Senior business professionals
- Sustainability and energy specialists
- Advanced manufacturing professionals
- Qualified entrepreneurs
Your occupation does not need to appear on a fixed job-search list. However, you should have realistic prospects of obtaining qualified employment or developing a viable business in Sweden.
Education Requirement
You must have completed studies corresponding to a Swedish second-cycle qualification.
This can include:
- A 60-credit master’s degree
- A 120-credit master’s degree
- An eligible professional degree
- A postgraduate qualification
- A doctoral or PhD-level qualification
A bachelor’s degree alone will not normally satisfy this particular permit’s second-cycle education requirement.
Degree Verification
Applicants normally need to provide:
- Degree certificate
- Academic transcripts
- List of subjects or courses
- Certified translations into Swedish or English
- A signed consent allowing the Swedish Council for Higher Education to verify the qualification
The Swedish authorities may contact the educational institution or relevant authority in the country where the qualification was awarded.
Sweden Job Search Visa Funds Requirement
Applicants must demonstrate personal bank assets of at least:
SEK 13,000 for each month requested
The applicant must also have sufficient funds to pay for the return journey from Sweden.
Required Funds by Permit Duration
| Requested Stay | Minimum Maintenance Funds |
|---|---|
| 3 months | SEK 39,000 |
| 6 months | SEK 78,000 |
| 9 months | SEK 117,000 |
These amounts do not include the cost of the return journey, health insurance, accommodation, visa processing or relocation.
Acceptable Financial Evidence
Applicants may need to provide:
- Personal bank statements
- Bank balance certificate
- Evidence of account ownership
- Evidence explaining significant recent deposits
- Proof that funds can legally be transferred abroad
- Central-bank approval where required
The funds should be available to the applicant throughout the requested permit period. Borrowed or temporarily transferred funds may create concerns regarding genuine financial capacity.
Comprehensive Health Insurance
The applicant must hold comprehensive health insurance valid for the entire intended stay in Sweden.
The insurance must cover:
- Urgent medical care
- Other necessary medical treatment
- Hospitalisation
- Emergency dental care
- Medical repatriation to the country of origin
Basic travel insurance may not be sufficient where it does not provide the required level or duration of coverage.
Can You Work on the Sweden Job Search Visa?
The permit allows you to search for work, attend interviews and meet prospective employers. It does not provide unrestricted employment rights from the date of arrival.
After receiving a qualifying job offer, you must apply for the appropriate Swedish work permit before starting regular employment.
Where the work-permit application is submitted while the job-search permit remains valid, the applicant may work for the employer and in the occupation covered by the new application while the Swedish Migration Agency processes it.
Important: This is not an open work permit. You cannot simply take any temporary or unrelated job while searching.
Requirements After Finding a Job
A Swedish work-permit application will generally require:
- A signed employment contract
- Salary and working conditions consistent with Swedish collective agreements or industry practice
- Employer-provided insurance
- Compliance with the current salary threshold
- A position meeting applicable Swedish work-permit rules
As of 16 June 2026, the standard work-permit salary threshold is at least SEK 34,470 per month, equal to 90% of Sweden’s current median salary. The required salary may be higher where a collective agreement or normal industry practice requires it.
Certain listed occupations may qualify under separate salary-exemption rules, but applicants should not rely on an exception without confirming that it applies when the work-permit application is filed.
Can You Start a Business?
The permit allows you to investigate the possibility of starting a Swedish business.
During the search period, you may:
- Research the Swedish market
- Explore business opportunities
- Meet potential partners
- Develop a business plan
- Investigate funding
- Review incorporation and regulatory requirements
If you decide to operate a business, you must apply for a Swedish residence permit as a self-employed person.
A person holding a valid job-search permit may apply for the self-employment residence permit from within Sweden and may run the business while that application is being processed, subject to the applicable rules.

Can Your Spouse and Children Accompany You?
The highly qualified job-search permit is primarily structured as an individual temporary search route. The Swedish Migration Agency’s official application process does not provide a standard linked dependant application under this initial category.
Family options are normally stronger after the principal applicant secures employment or establishes a qualifying business and changes to a work or self-employment permit. Under those categories, eligible family members may be able to apply for residence permits.
Applicants intending to relocate immediately with a spouse or children should complete a detailed family assessment before applying.
Is Swedish Language Mandatory?
The Swedish Migration Agency does not publish a general Swedish-language test requirement for this job-search permit.
However, language ability can have a major effect on actual employment prospects.
English-speaking opportunities may be more available in sectors such as:
- Software development
- Artificial intelligence
- Data science
- Engineering
- Research
- International finance
- Multinational technology companies
Many healthcare, education, government, customer-service and regulated occupations require Swedish proficiency or professional registration.
Is Employment Guaranteed?
No.
The Sweden Job Search Visa provides an opportunity to enter Sweden and look for work. It does not provide:
- Guaranteed employment
- Government job placement
- Guaranteed interviews
- A guaranteed salary
- Free accommodation
- An open work permit
- Automatic family residence
- Permanent residence
- Automatic extension
Applicants should realistically assess their profession, experience, language ability, licensing requirements and available savings.
