Join Your British or Settled Partner in the United Kingdom
UK Spouse Visa From Pakistan
The UK Spouse Visa allows an eligible non-British husband, wife, civil partner or qualifying unmarried partner to live with their sponsor in the United Kingdom.
The sponsor may generally be a British or Irish citizen, a person settled in the UK or another person holding an eligible status. Both partners must normally be at least 18 and intend to live together permanently in the UK.

Can a British Citizen Living Abroad Sponsor a Partner?
Are you looking to join your spouse in the UK? The UK Spousal Visa (also known as the UK Marriage Visa) allows non-UK citizens who are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen or settled person to live, work, and study in the UK.
This visa opens doors to a new life in the UK with your loved one, but the process can be complex. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you understand the eligibility criteria, required documents, and application process.
- A genuine intention to return to the UK
- Plans to live together permanently
- Suitable UK accommodation
- Compliance with the financial requirement
- A confirmed UK employment or self-employment plan where overseas earnings are relied upon
Home Office guidance specifically provides financial routes for an overseas sponsor returning to the UK with the applicant.
Eligibility Criteria for the UK Spousal Visa
Applicants must generally demonstrate:
- A marriage or civil partnership recognised in the UK; or a qualifying durable relationship
- A genuine and continuing relationship
- Intention to live together permanently in the UK
- Adequate, non-overcrowded accommodation
- Compliance with the financial requirement
- English at the required level
- A valid TB certificate where applicable
- Compliance with suitability and immigration-history requirements
The first spouse or partner visa is normally granted for up to 2 years and 9 months. A further qualifying extension is normally granted for 2 years and 6 months.
UK Spouse Visa Financial Requirement
Most new spouse and partner applications must demonstrate qualifying gross annual income of at least:
£29,000 per year
There is currently no additional income amount for accompanying children under the standard post-11 April 2024 threshold. Applicants already protected by the pre-11 April 2024 transitional rules may remain subject to the earlier calculation.
Qualifying sources may include:
- Salaried or non-salaried employment
- Self-employment
- Certain company-director income
- Pension income
- Rental, dividend or other permitted non-employment income
- Cash savings above £16,000
Strict evidence periods and combination rules apply.
Financial Route for a British Sponsor Returning from Abroad
Category A: Same Overseas Employer for at Least Six Months
The returning British sponsor must normally show both:
- Current overseas employment held for at least six months at the income level relied upon; and
- A confirmed UK job offer starting within three months of returning to the UK.
The present overseas income and future UK salary must each satisfy the £29,000 requirement, either alone or with permitted income or savings.
Example
A British sponsor earns £32,000 abroad and has worked for the same employer for more than six months. They also hold a confirmed UK job offer paying £31,000 and starting within three months of return.
This may satisfy Category A, subject to the correct payslips, bank statements, employer letters and UK employment contract.
Category B:Less Than Six Months, Variable Income or Recently Unemployed
The returning sponsor must normally meet two tests:
- Hold a confirmed UK job offer starting within three months of return and meeting the financial requirement.
- Show actual qualifying income of at least £29,000 received during the 12 months before applying.
Cash savings may help meet the future UK job-offer calculation but cannot normally replace the historical 12-month income requirement under the second part of Category B.
Overseas Self-Employment
A British sponsor operating a business abroad may potentially rely on overseas self-employment where:
- The required business and tax evidence is provided; and
- The self-employment will continue in the UK; or
- The sponsor has confirmed qualifying UK employment beginning within three months of return.
Self-employment cases require detailed accounts, tax records, business evidence and source-specific calculations.
Important:
At the initial overseas application stage, the non-British applicant’s foreign employment salary or prospective UK job normally cannot be counted. The returning British sponsor’s overseas employment may count under the specific returning-sponsor rules.
UK Spouse Visa Cash-Savings Formula
Cash savings must normally:
- Exceed £16,000
- Be held for at least six months
- Be controlled by the applicant, sponsor or both jointly
- Be supported by bank statements and source-of-funds evidence
Formula for Initial and Extension Applications
Required savings = £16,000 + 2.5 × annual income shortfall
The alternative calculation is:
Annual income provided by savings = (Total savings − £16,000) ÷ 2.5
Calculation Examples:
| Qualifying Annual Income | Income Shortfall | Required Savings |
|---|---|---|
| £29,000 | £0 | No savings needed |
| £25,000 | £4,000 | £26,000 |
| £20,000 | £9,000 | £38,500 |
| £15,000 | £14,000 | £51,000 |
| No qualifying income | £29,000 | £88,500 |
Example Formula
Where qualifying income is £20,000:
£29,000 − £20,000 = £9,000 shortfall
£9,000 × 2.5 = £22,500
£22,500 + £16,000 = £38,500 required savings
Cash savings cannot be combined with every income category. In particular, restrictions apply when relying on self-employment or income from certain specified limited companies.
Relationship and Accommodation Evidence
Common supporting documents include:
- Marriage or civil-partnership certificate
- Relationship photographs
- Travel and communication records
- Joint financial documents
- Evidence of visits or cohabitation
- Statements explaining periods of separation
- UK tenancy agreement, property ownership or host confirmation
- Accommodation inspection evidence where appropriate
The accommodation must be legally occupied, suitable for the family and not overcrowded.
English Requirement
| Stage | English Requirement |
|---|---|
| First spouse application | CEFR A1 |
| Extension | CEFR A2 |
| Settlement | CEFR B1 plus Life in the UK Test |
English may also be demonstrated through an eligible nationality or recognised English-taught qualification.
Current Government Costs
| Charge | Current Amount |

| Application outside the UK | £2,064 |
| Adult IHS for 2 years 9 months | £3,105 |
| Child IHS for 2 years 9 months | £2,328 |

Work Rights and Settlement
A successful spouse or partner visa normally permits employment, self-employment and study in the UK.
The standard partner route may lead to indefinite leave to remain after five years, subject to continued relationship, residence, financial, English and settlement requirements.
UK Spouse Visa Application Process From Pakistan
1. Assess the Relationship, Sponsor Status & Financial Route
The process begins with a detailed evaluation of the applicant’s relationship to ensure it meets UKVI requirements (genuine and subsisting). The sponsor’s status (British citizen, settled person, or refugee) is confirmed, and the most suitable financial route (employment, self-employment, savings, or combination) is identified.
2. Calculate Qualifying Income and Savings
A thorough review of the sponsor’s income and/or savings is conducted to ensure the financial requirement is met. This includes verifying salary, employment type, duration, and acceptable sources of income, or calculating savings if relying on the cash savings route.
3. Secure UK Accommodation
Applicants must show that suitable accommodation is available in the UK without overcrowding. This may include a tenancy agreement, property ownership documents, or a letter from a host along with supporting property evidence.
4. Prepare Relationship, Employment & Financial Evidence
All supporting documents are carefully compiled, including proof of relationship (photos, communication, marriage certificate), employment documents (job letter, payslips), and financial evidence (bank statements, tax documents) in line with UKVI guidelines.
5. Complete English Language & TB Requirements
The applicant must meet the English language requirement through an approved test (if applicable) and obtain a Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate from a UK-approved clinic in Pakistan.
6. Submit the Online Application and Biometrics
The visa application is completed and submitted online. The applicant then books and attends a biometric appointment at the Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide fingerprints and a photograph, along with submitting documents.
7. Await the UKVI Decision
Once submitted, the application is processed by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Processing times may vary, and additional documents may be requested if required before a final decision is made.
Common Reasons for Refusal
When applying for a UK Spouse Visa, even small errors or omissions can lead to refusal. Many applicants face challenges due to misunderstandings of the financial requirements, inadequate documentation, or failure to meet key eligibility criteria set by UKVI. Below are some of the most common issues that can negatively impact an application and should be carefully addressed before submission:
- Incorrect returning-sponsor financial category
- UK job offer begins more than three months after return
- Overseas salary evidence is incomplete
- Applicant incorrectly relies on their own foreign salary
- Savings formula is miscalculated
- Savings have not been held for six months
- Payslips and bank deposits do not match
- Weak relationship evidence
- Accommodation is unsuitable
- Missing English or TB documents
Review rights are not available in every offshore visitor case. The refusal notice should be examined carefully before deciding whether to reapply or pursue any other available option.
