Canada Parent and Grandparent Super Visa
The Canada Super Visa is a multiple-entry temporary resident visa for eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens, permanent residents and registered Indians.
It can allow an approved parent or grandparent to:
- Visit Canada for up to five years at a time
- Receive a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 10 years, subject to passport validity
- Apply to extend visitor status before the authorised stay expires
- Visit family without waiting for a Parent and Grandparent Program invitation
The Super Visa is a temporary visitor visa. It does not provide permanent residence or employment rights.

Who Can Apply?
The applicant must be the:
- Parent of the Canadian host; or
- Grandparent of the Canadian host
The applicant must generally:
- Apply from outside Canada
- Be admissible to Canada
- Complete an immigration medical examination
- Obtain qualifying private medical insurance
- Demonstrate genuine temporary-visitor intentions
- Show sufficient family, financial and residential ties
- Have the visa issued through a visa office outside Canada
IRCC considers the purpose of travel, finances, home-country ties and whether the applicant is likely to leave Canada at the end of the authorised stay.
Host Requirements
The inviting child or grandchild must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Live in Canada
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian
- Meet the minimum necessary income
- Provide a signed invitation letter
- Prove their status and relationship to the applicant
The host’s spouse or common-law partner may co-sign where they also hold eligible Canadian status. Other relatives, including siblings, cannot co-sign.

The required income depends on the host’s total family size.

These figures remain the current IRCC-published minimums as of 6 August 2026.
How Family Size Is Calculated
The count may include:
- The host
- The host’s spouse or common-law partner
- Their dependent children
- The visiting parent or grandparent
- Any accompanying Super Visa applicant
- Previously invited Super Visa holders still covered by an active invitation
- People covered by an ongoing sponsorship undertaking
Example
A married Canadian host with two dependent children inviting both parents has a family size of six:
Host + spouse + two children + two parents = six people
The host must therefore demonstrate at least CAD 72,560 under the current table.
New Income Rules Effective 31 March 2026
IRCC now provides two ways to meet the financial requirement.
Option 1: Host Meets the Full Requirement
The host and eligible co-signer may show that their income met the full required amount in either of the two tax years before the application.
A Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment is the preferred evidence.
Option 2: Applicant Income Helps Cover the Shortfall
The host and co-signer must first demonstrate at least 75% of the required income for the year before applying.
The visiting parent or grandparent may then add their own qualifying income to cover the remaining amount.
Evidence may include:
- CRA Notice of Assessment
- T4 or T1 records
- Payslips
- Employer letter
- Pension statements
- Bank statements
- Rental-income evidence
These revised rules apply to applications submitted or already in processing from 31 March 2026.
Documents Commonly Required
A Super Visa application commonly includes:
- Valid passport
- Host’s invitation letter
- Host’s citizenship or permanent-residence evidence
- Birth or other documents proving the relationship
- Host’s income documents
- Family-size calculation
- Private medical insurance policy
- Immigration medical examination
- Applicant’s bank and pension evidence
- Travel-purpose statement
- Evidence of home-country ties
- Marriage documents where applicable
- Certified English or French translations
- Biometrics
Additional documents may be requested according to the applicant’s country and personal circumstances.
Mandatory Medical Insurance
Each applicant must hold private medical insurance that:
- Is valid for at least one year from the date of entry
- Provides at least CAD 100,000 in emergency coverage
- Covers healthcare, hospitalisation and repatriation
- Is paid in full or through an accepted instalment plan with a deposit
- Is valid for every entry into Canada
- Is available for review by border officers
A quotation alone is not accepted.
The policy may be issued by:
- A Canadian insurance company; or
- An eligible foreign insurer authorised by OSFI to provide accident and sickness insurance and issuing the policy through its Canadian insurance business
Insurance should remain valid throughout the parent or grandparent’s stay.
Canada Parent and Grandparent Super Visa Application Process
Applying for a Canada Super Visa for parents and grandparents involves several important steps to ensure that both the host in Canada and the applicant meet all eligibility and documentation requirements. The host must provide a formal invitation letter outlining the purpose and duration of the visit, along with proof of income such as employment letters, pay slips, and tax documents to demonstrate financial eligibility.
4. Purchase Compliant Medical Insurance
Applicants are required to obtain valid Canadian medical insurance from an approved provider. The policy must meet specific requirements, including minimum coverage, validity period (usually at least one year), and coverage for healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation.
5. Complete the Immigration Medical Examination
A medical examination must be completed by an approved panel physician to confirm that the applicant meets Canada’s health requirements before or during the application process.
6. Submit the Online Super Visa Application
The application is submitted online through the official immigration portal. All required forms, documents, and fees must be included to avoid delays or rejection due to incompleteness.
7. Provide Biometrics and Additional Documents
Applicants may be required to attend a biometric appointment to provide fingerprints and photographs. Immigration authorities may also request additional documents during processing.
8. Submit the Passport After Approval Instructions
Once the application is approved, applicants will receive instructions to submit their passport for visa stamping. This step is necessary before travel to Canada.
9. Carry the Insurance and Invitation Evidence When Travelling
At the time of travel, applicants should carry copies of their medical insurance and invitation letter, as border officers may request these documents upon arrival in Canada.
Final admission and the authorised period of stay are determined by the Canada Border Services Agency when the traveller enters Canada.
