Live in Portugal While Working Remotely

Applicants must demonstrate genuine remote work, sufficient monthly income, appropriate accommodation and the ability to support themselves in Portugal.

What Is the Portugal D8 Visa?

The Portugal D8 Visa is a national visa for professionals who perform their employment or independent professional activity remotely for individuals or organisations located outside Portugal.

Applicants may qualify as:

  1. Employees of foreign companies
  2. Freelancers with overseas clients
  3. Independent contractors
  4. Owners or directors of foreign businesses
  5. Professionals providing remote services

A Portuguese job offer is not required.

However, the D8 Visa is not a general job-seeker visa. Applicants must already have a genuine remote employment or professional arrangement before applying.

Portugal officially provides both temporary-stay and residence-visa categories for remote

Two Portugal D8 Visa Options

D8 Temporary-Stay Visa

The temporary-stay route may suit applicants who want to live and work remotely from Portugal for more than 90 days but for less than one year.

It may offer:

  1. Residence in Portugal for a temporary period
  2. Multiple entry during the visa’s validity, where issued
  3. Continued remote work for an overseas employer or clients
  4. No requirement to obtain a long-term residence permit

This option may be more suitable for applicants who do not yet intend to make Portugal their principal long-term residence.

D8 Residence Visa

The residence route is intended for applicants planning to establish longer-term residence in Portugal.

The residence visa normally:

  1. Allows two entries into Portugal
  2. Is valid for four months
  3. Enables the applicant to complete the residence-permit process after arrival

Portugal’s official national-visa guidance confirms that a residence visa is generally valid for four months and two entries.

After the applicant completes the Portuguese residence process, the remote-work residence permit is currently:

  1. Valid for two years initially
  2. Renewable for successive three-year periods

Portugal D8 Visa Income Requirement 2026

Applicants must demonstrate average monthly income earned during the previous three months equal to at least four times Portugal’s monthly minimum wage.

Portugal’s 2026 monthly minimum wage is:

€920 per month

The principal D8 applicant must therefore demonstrate average monthly income of at least:

€3,680 per month

The proposed activity must be capable of providing resources at least equivalent to France’s full-time minimum wage, known as the SMIC.

As of June 2026, the full-time SMIC is:

Minimum Income Calculation

Applicant Current Financial Benchmark
Principal applicant €3,680 per month
One additional adult Add approximately €460 per month
Each dependent child Add approximately €276 per month

The additional family figures use Portugal’s general national-visa means-of-subsistence formula:

  • 50% of the minimum wage for each additional adult
  • 30% for each dependent child

These family amounts are general planning benchmarks. A Portuguese consular authority may request stronger financial evidence depending on family size, accommodation costs, income stability and the circumstances of the application.

Important: Meeting the numerical minimum does not guarantee approval. The source, regularity, legality and continuity of income must also be established.

How to Prove Your Remote Income

Remote Employees

A remote employee may need to provide:

  1. Employment contract
  2. Employer confirmation letter
  3. Employment start date
  4. Job title and duties
  5. Current salary
  6. Confirmation that remote work is permitted
  7. Confirmation that the work can be performed from Portugal
  8. Recent payslips
  9. Bank statements showing salary deposits
  10. Company registration or operational evidence

Freelancers and Independent Professionals

A freelancer may need:

  1. Service contracts
  2. Client agreements
  3. Statements of work
  4. Invoices
  5. Payment records
  6. Bank statements
  7. Evidence of an ongoing professional relationship
  8. Client confirmation letters
  9. Professional or company-registration documents

Business Owners

A business owner may need:

  1. Company incorporation documents
  2. Shareholding evidence
  3. Proof of directorship or management position
  4. Company financial statements
  5. Contracts with international clients
  6. Evidence of business activity
  7. Personal salary, dividend or remuneration records
  8. Confirmation that the activity can be performed remotely

Income documents should be consistent. Contracts, invoices, payslips and bank deposits should support the same amounts and professional arrangement.

General Portugal D8 Visa Requirements

Applicants must generally:

  1. Be a non-EU, non-EEA and non-Swiss national
  2. Hold a valid passport
  3. Perform work remotely
  4. Work for an employer or clients outside Portugal
  5. Demonstrate the required income
  6. Provide proof of accommodation
  7. Hold appropriate travel or medical insurance
  8. Provide a criminal-record certificate
  9. Authorise Portuguese criminal-record checks
  10. Demonstrate sufficient means of support
  11. Meet Portuguese entry and security requirements
  12. Submit the application through the responsible Portuguese authority

For the residence route, applicants may also be expected to obtain:

  • A Portuguese tax-identification number, known as a NIF
  • A Portuguese bank account
  • Suitable longer-term accommodation

Certain Portuguese consular checklists expressly request a NIF and evidence of a Portuguese bank account for remote-work residence applications.

Accommodation Requirement

Applicants must demonstrate credible accommodation in Portugal.

Evidence may include:

  1. Residential lease agreement
  2. Property ownership documents
  3. Confirmed hotel or serviced-apartment booking
  4. Hosted-accommodation declaration
  5. Accommodation provided by a family member or other eligible host

For a long-term residence application, a genuine residential arrangement is normally stronger than a short hotel reservation.

At the AIMA residence-permit stage, the applicant must declare their Portuguese address and explain the legal basis on which they occupy the property, such as ownership, tenancy, subtenancy or authorised use.

Health and Travel Insurance

Applicants normally need travel medical insurance covering:

  1. Urgent medical treatment
  2. Hospital care
  3. Medical emergencies
  4. Repatriation
  5. The relevant visa or entry period

After becoming resident, additional Portuguese healthcare or social-security arrangements may apply depending on the applicant’s work structure, nationality and circumstances.

Applicants should not assume that ordinary short-term travel insurance will satisfy every post-arrival requirement.

Can Your Spouse and Children Accompany You?

Eligible family members may accompany or later join the principal applicant through the applicable accompanying-family or family-reunification process.

This may include:

  1. A legally married spouse
  2. An eligible de facto partner
  3. Minor children
  4. Dependent children
  5. Certain dependent parents

Applicants must normally demonstrate:

  1. The family relationship
  2. Additional financial resources
  3. Suitable accommodation
  4. Insurance coverage
  5. Dependence where applicable

Portugal’s national-visa guidance allows accompanying family members to apply by providing evidence of family ties and sufficient stable and regular resources.

A family member granted residence through reunification generally receives a permit with a duration corresponding to that of the resident sponsor

The Talent Project Creator route currently requires a qualifying project, sufficient personal resources and at least €30,000 in project financing for the business-creation category.

€110

This applies to both residence and temporary-stay national visa applications.

Additional costs may include:

  1. Visa-application centre service fee
  2. Portuguese residence-permit fee
  3. NIF assistance
  4. Bank-account arrangements

  10. Professional service charges

Government and service fees should be reconfirmed before payment.

Portugal D8 Visa and Tax Residence

A visa and tax residence are separate legal matters.

An applicant may become tax resident in Portugal depending on:

  1. The number of days spent in Portugal
  2. Whether a habitual home is maintained there
  3. Personal and economic connections
  4. Applicable double-taxation agreements
  5. Employment or business structure

Remote workers may need advice concerning:

  1. Foreign salary
  2. Freelance income
  3. Overseas companies
  4. Dividends
  5. Social-security contributions
  6. VAT
  7. Permanent-establishment risks
  8. Tax reporting in more than one country

Superior Consulting does not provide Portuguese tax advice unless it is separately supplied by an appropriately qualified professional.

Pathway to Permanent Residence and Citizenship

The D8 residence route can contribute toward a longer-term future in Portugal.

Permanent Residence

A person who has held temporary residence in Portugal for at least five years may be eligible to apply for permanent residence, subject to:

  1. Sufficient means of support
  2. Suitable accommodation
  3. Compliance with tax and social-security obligations
  4. Basic Portuguese-language knowledge
  5. Criminal and immigration compliance

Portuguese Citizenship

Legal residence may also create potential eligibility to apply for Portuguese nationality after at least five years, subject to language, criminal-record and other legal requirements.

Nationality is not automatic and must be separately applied for and approved

Common Reasons Applications Fail

The applicant must demonstrate average qualifying income of at least €3,680 per month under the 2026 threshold.

A high one-time payment may not demonstrate stable monthly remote income.

The employer should clearly authorise the applicant to work remotely from Portugal.

The amounts shown in contracts, invoices, payslips and bank deposits should be consistent.

Applicants should demonstrate that the employment, freelance or business arrangement is genuine and established.

A short or unverifiable booking may not support a genuine long-term residence plan.

Applicants intending permanent relocation should not rely on a temporary-stay application simply because it appears easier.

Large recent transfers should be supported by credible source-of-funds evidence.

A D8 Visa does not automatically provide a particular tax exemption or preferential tax regime.

Who Is the Portugal D8 Visa Best Suited For?

The D8 Visa may be suitable for applicants who:

  1. Already earn a stable remote income
  2. Work for an established overseas company
  3. Have long-term international clients
  4. Can work from anywhere
  5. Meet the income threshold
  6. Want to live in Portugal
  7. Can obtain appropriate accommodation
  8. Are prepared for Portuguese tax and residence obligations

Who May Not Be Suitable?

The route may not suit applicants who:

  1. Have no current remote work
  2. Intend to search for employment after arrival
  3. Earn below the financial threshold
  4. Receive irregular or undocumented cash income
  5. Cannot obtain employer permission
  6. Work mainly at a physical workplace
  7. Depend only on savings without continuing work
  8. Cannot document their clients or business
  9. Do not intend to spend meaningful time in Portugal

Applicants with passive income who do not intend to work should consider the Portugal D7 Visa. Applicants intending to create or acquire a Portuguese business may need to consider the Portugal D2 Entrepreneur Visa.
