Portugal D7 Visa

The Portugal D7 Visa is a residence pathway for non-EU nationals who can support themselves through stable personal income or financial resources

Live in Portugal Through Pension, Passive Income or Personal Financial Resources

Often called the Portugal Passive Income Visa or Retirement Visa, it may be suitable for:

  1. Retired individuals
  2. Pension recipients
  3. Property owners receiving rental income
  4. Applicants receiving dividends or investment income
  5. Individuals receiving royalties
  6. Financially independent applicants
  7. Families seeking long-term residence in Portugal

The D7 Visa does not require a Portuguese job offer, employer sponsorship, points score or fixed property investment.

Check Your Portugal D7 Eligibility

Before applying, determine:

What Is the Portugal D7 Visa?

The D7 is a Portuguese national residence visa for retirees, religious applicants and people living from their own stable income.

It allows the successful applicant to enter Portugal and complete the residence-permit process with the Portuguese Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, known as AIMA.

A Portuguese residence visa is generally valid for four months and two entries. During that period, the applicant must complete the residence-permit process in Portugal.

Main Benefits of the Portugal D7 Visa

A successful applicant may be able to:

  1. Establish legal residence in Portugal
  2. Include eligible family members
  3. Live, study and access services in Portugal
  4. Travel within the Schengen Area, subject to applicable rules
  5. Obtain an initial two-year residence permit
  6. Renew the permit for successive three-year periods
  7. Pursue permanent residence after five years
  8. Potentially apply for Portuguese citizenship after five years of qualifying legal residence

Temporary Portuguese residence permits are generally valid for two years and renewable for successive three-year periods. Permanent residence may be available after at least five years of temporary residence, while Portugal’s official nationality guidance currently identifies five years of legal residence as a potential basis for citizenship.

Permanent residence and citizenship are not automatic. Separate applications, language requirements and other legal conditions apply.

Portugal D7 Income Requirement 2026

Portugal calculates the financial requirement using the national monthly minimum wage.

The minimum wage for mainland Portugal increased to €920 per month from 1 January 2026.

The general means-of-subsistence formula is:

  1. 100% for the principal applicant
  2. 50% for each additional adult
  3. 30% for each dependent child

Minimum D7 Funds for 2026

Applicant Monthly Benchmark Annual Benchmark
Principal applicant €920 €11,040
Spouse or additional adult €460 €5,520
Each dependent child €276 €3,312

Family Examples

Family Composition Minimum Annual Benchmark
One applicant €11,040
Applicant and spouse €16,560
Applicant, spouse and one child €19,872
Applicant, spouse and two children €23,184

These are minimum planning figures rather than approval guarantees. Portuguese consular authorities may assess income stability, savings, accommodation costs, family size and the overall sustainability of the relocation plan.

Practical Advice: An application supported by consistent recurring income and savings above the minimum is generally stronger than one relying only on the exact statutory amount.

What Income Can Support a D7 Application?

Qualifying evidence may include:

The proposed activity must be capable of providing resources at least equivalent to France’s full-time minimum wage, known as the SMIC.

As of June 2026, the full-time SMIC is:

  1. State or private pension
  2. Retirement income
  3. Rental income
  4. Dividends
  5. Investment distributions
  6. Royalties
  7. Annuity income
  8. Trust or estate distributions
  9. Interest income
  10. Other stable personal income
  11. Substantial accessible savings

The applicant should demonstrate that the income is:

  1. Legally earned
  2. Regular and sustainable
  3. Available to the applicant
  4. Sufficient for the family
  5. Likely to continue after relocation

Common Supporting Evidence

Applicants may provide:

  1. Bank statements
  2. Pension certificates
  3. Rental agreements
  4. Property-ownership documents
  5. Tax returns
  6. Dividend statements
  7. Investment-portfolio statements
  8. Royalty contracts
  9. Company-distribution records
  10. Evidence explaining major deposits
  11. Proof of recurring payments

Income documents should correspond with the deposits shown in the applicant’s bank accounts.

Can Savings Be Used for the Portugal D7 Visa?

Savings can support a D7 application, particularly where they demonstrate that the applicant can maintain themselves after relocating.

However, relying only on a recently deposited balance may be weaker than showing:

  1. Regular pension or passive income
  2. A credible savings history
  3. A clear source of funds
  4. Sufficient funds for more than the minimum period
  5. Continued access to the money after moving

Borrowed or temporarily transferred funds may raise concerns if the applicant cannot establish genuine ownership and long-term availability.

Is Remote Work Allowed on a D7 Visa?

The D7 application should be based primarily on stable personal income or financial resources rather than a plan to find work after arriving. Applicants whose principal income comes from ongoing remote employment or freelance activity should usually assess the Portugal D8 Digital Nomad Visa, which is specifically designed for remote workers. However, once a Portuguese residence permit is issued, Portuguese law generally gives residence-permit holders the right to undertake employed or self-employed professional activity without requiring a separate authorisation based solely on their foreign nationality. The immigration, tax and social-security consequences of working after arrival should be reviewed separately.

Portugal D7 vs D8 Digital Nomad Visa

Feature Portugal D7 Visa Portugal D8 Visa
Main basis Pension, passive income or own resources Active remote employment or freelance income
2026 principal benchmark €920 per month €3,680 per month
Portuguese job offer Not required Not required
Overseas employer or clients Not required Normally required
Best suited for Retirees and financially independent applicants Remote employees and freelancers
Residence pathway Yes Yes, under the residence option
Family inclusion Available Available

Applicants should select the visa that accurately reflects the source of their income and intended activity.

Accommodation Requirement

Applicants must provide credible evidence of accommodation in Portugal.

This may include:

  1. Residential tenancy agreement
  2. Property-ownership documents
  3. Formal invitation or accommodation declaration
  4. Accommodation provided by an eligible host
  5. Other accepted proof of a genuine Portuguese address

For a residence application, a proper medium- or long-term residential arrangement is usually stronger than a short tourist booking.

At the AIMA stage, applicants are required to declare their Portuguese residence address and the legal basis on which they occupy the property.

NIF and Portuguese Bank Account

A Portuguese tax-identification number, known as a NIF, is commonly needed for practical matters such as:

  1. Opening a bank account
  2. Renting or purchasing property
  3. Tax registration
  4. Utility contracts
  5. Financial transactions in Portugal

Many D7 applicants also open a Portuguese bank account and deposit sufficient funds before applying. The exact consular checklist may vary according to the applicant’s location and responsible Portuguese post.

Applicants should follow the checklist issued for their own jurisdiction rather than relying on a generic online document list.

Health and Travel Insurance

Applicants normally need travel medical insurance for the visa and entry period.

The policy should generally cover:

  1. Medical emergencies
  2. Urgent treatment
  3. Hospitalisation
  4. Repatriation
  5. The applicable travel and visa period

At the Portuguese residence-permit stage, applicants may need health insurance or evidence that they are covered by Portugal’s National Health Service.

Can Your Family Apply?

Eligible family members may apply with the principal applicant or later through the family-reunification process.

This may include:

  1. Spouse
  2. Eligible unmarried or de facto partner
  3. Minor children
  4. Certain dependent adult children
  5. Dependent parents in qualifying circumstances

Additional financial resources, accommodation and evidence of the family relationship must be provided.

Portugal confirms that holders of valid residence permits may seek family reunification for eligible relatives residing outside Portugal.

Documents Commonly Required

The final checklist varies by nationality and consular jurisdiction.

Common documents may include:

  1. National visa application form
  2. Valid passport
  3. Passport photographs
  4. Proof of lawful residence in the country of application
  5. Personal statement or cover letter
  6. Pension or passive-income evidence
  7. Bank statements
  8. Portuguese bank-account evidence where required
  9. NIF evidence where required
  10. Proof of accommodation
  11. Travel medical insurance
  12. Criminal-record certificate
  13. Authorisation for Portuguese criminal-record checks
  14. Marriage certificate
  15. Birth certificates
  16. Dependency evidence
  17. Tax records
  18. Certified translations
  19. Apostille or legalisation where applicable

Portugal’s general residence-visa documentation also requires evidence concerning criminal records, accommodation, means of subsistence and insurance.

  5. How the applicant will support the family

Step 5: Submit the National Visa Application

The Embassy of Portugal in Islamabad currently directs visa appointment requests and visa-related communication through its designated consular process.

Portugal D7 Visa Fee

The current Portuguese national visa application fee is:

€110 per applicant

Additional costs may include:

  • Visa application-centre charges
  • Residence-permit fees
  • Police certificates
  • Insurance
  • Translation

Apostille or legalisation

  • NIF or bank-account assistance
  • Accommodation
  • Professional service charges

Portugal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs currently lists the national visa processing fee as €110.

Residence, Absence and Renewal Planning

The D7 is intended for applicants establishing genuine residence in Portugal rather than obtaining a residence card while principally living elsewhere.

Renewal generally requires continued compliance with:

  1. Financial requirements
  2. Accommodation requirements
  3. Health coverage
  4. Criminal-record rules
  5. Tax and social-security obligations where applicable
  6. Portuguese residence and absence rules

Applicants planning extensive travel outside Portugal should obtain individual advice before relying on time spent abroad as qualifying residence.

Portugal D7 and Tax Residence

Immigration residence and tax residence are separate matters.

A person may become tax resident in Portugal if they:

  1. Spend more than 183 days in Portugal during the relevant 12-month period; or
  2. Maintain a home in circumstances indicating an intention to occupy it as their habitual residence.

Portuguese tax residence can affect pensions, rental income, dividends, investments, overseas companies and worldwide income reporting.

The D7 Visa does not automatically grant a special tax exemption. Personal Portuguese tax advice should be obtained before relocation.

Permanent Residence and Portuguese Citizenship

Permanent Residence

An applicant who has held temporary Portuguese residence for at least five years may qualify for permanent residence.

The requirements generally include:

  1. At least five years of temporary residence
  2. Sufficient means of support
  3. Accommodation
  4. Compliance with tax and social-security obligations
  5. Basic Portuguese-language knowledge
  6. Criminal and immigration compliance

Portugal’s current permanent-residence guidance accepts several forms of evidence of basic Portuguese, including an eligible A2-level Portuguese-language certificate.

The Talent Project Creator route currently requires a qualifying project, sufficient personal resources and at least €30,000 in project financing for the business-creation category.

Portuguese Citizenship

Portugal’s official nationality guidance currently states that a person who has legally resided in Portugal for at least five years may be eligible to apply for Portuguese citizenship.

Applicants must also meet the applicable language, criminal-record and legal requirements. Citizenship is not automatic.

Common Reasons D7 Applications Fail

A large bank balance may not replace credible evidence that the applicant can continue supporting themselves.

Rental, pension, dividend and investment income should be supported by contracts, ownership evidence, tax records and payment history.

The application must account for the principal applicant and every accompanying dependent.

Large transfers shortly before filing should be supported by clear source-of-funds documents.

The accommodation should support a genuine plan to establish residence in Portugal.

Applicants mainly supported by remote employment or freelance work may be better suited to the D8 Visa.

The application should explain why the applicant wants to live in Portugal and how they will maintain themselves after arrival.
